Home Troubleshooting Guide
Small Fixes.
Big Difference.
Simple checks to save time, prevent waste, and care for your house or apartment.
Try only the steps you feel comfortable with. If the issue continues, contact maintenance.
Toilet Keeps Running
- Return the flush handle to its resting position.
- Carefully lift the tank lid onto a towel.
- On a standard flapper toilet, gently free a tangled chain so the rubber flapper can close.
Still running? Report it promptly. Close the toilet’s water valve only if it turns easily.
Toilet Is Clogged
- Stop flushing. If water rises, close the water valve if it turns easily.
- Use a toilet plunger with a tight seal. Start with a gentle push, then plunge steadily.
- Once water returns to normal, reopen the valve and try one flush.
No chemical drain cleaners or boiling water. If plunging fails, contact maintenance.
A Breaker Has Tripped
- Unplug appliances on the affected circuit.
- With dry hands and a dry floor, open only the panel’s hinged door.
- Move the tripped handle fully OFF, then ON once.
If it trips again, leave it off and contact maintenance. Stay away from a wet, damaged, buzzing, or scorched panel.
An Outlet Stopped Working
- Unplug appliances from affected outlets.
- Look nearby for an outlet with TEST and RESET buttons.
- If the outlet is dry and undamaged, press RESET once.
One GFCI can control several outlets. If it will not reset or trips again, stop and contact maintenance.
Disposal Hums or Stops
- Turn the disposal switch OFF immediately.
- Disconnect power. If your model has a hex socket underneath, use the proper disposal wrench gently to free the jam.
- Remove the wrench and follow the model’s reset instructions before restoring power.
Never put your hand inside. If unsure or still jammed, contact maintenance.
A Drain Is Slow
- Remove visible hair from the drain opening.
- Clean a stopper only if it lifts out easily.
- Gently use a plastic hair-removal tool as directed, then check drainage.
Do not force parts or take pipes apart. Do not use tools after adding chemicals. Several drains backing up? Contact maintenance.
Dishes Come Out Dirty
- Turn the dishwasher off and let it cool.
- Check the manual for removing and rinsing its washable filter.
- Reinstall the filter securely and keep dishes clear of spray arms and the detergent dispenser.
Never run it with the filter missing. Report persistent problems.
Prevent Bigger Problems
- Flush only toilet paper and human waste.
- Put cooled cooking grease in the trash.
- Use a hair catcher and clean it often.
- Clean dryer lint before or after every load.
- Report running toilets and small leaks promptly.
